The man who scored on his 19th birthday to win the European Cup
In short: Before he was a legendary assistant coach, Brian Kidd was a clinical striker. From a historic birthday goal for Manchester United to a high-profile fallout with Alex Ferguson, his career spans the most iconic eras of English football, including the rise of the 'Class of 92'.
Born in Manchester on 29 May 1949, Brian Kidd’s professional journey began in the Manchester United academy, which he joined in August 1964. His most iconic moment as a player arrived in 1968, when he scored during a 4–1 victory over Benfica in the European Cup Final—a feat achieved on his 19th birthday. Over his tenure at United, he netted 52 goals in 203 league appearances.
Kidd’s playing career saw him move through several major clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, and Everton. At Arsenal, he was the club's top scorer during the 1974–75 season, contributing 19 goals. His time in the United States with the NASL was equally prolific; playing for the Atlanta Chiefs in 1981, he scored 23 goals in just 29 appearances.
Transitioning to coaching, Kidd became a pivotal figure in the Manchester United dynasty under Alex Ferguson. As assistant manager from 1991, he helped nurture the 'Class of 92' talents, including Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. However, the relationship famously fractured in 1999 after Ferguson criticized Kidd’s judgment in his autobiography, *Managing My Far Life*.
Despite this rift, Kidd continued to reach the pinnacle of the sport. He served as assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson for the England national team and later played a key role in Manchester City's recent era of dominance. He was on the pitch celebrating City's dramatic Premier League title win in the 2011–12 season, a victory secured by a stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers.
