From bench-sitting athlete to the architect of a country music juggernaut
In short: Brian Kelley didn't find his path to the top of the charts in a stadium. He found it on a high school car wash and a college worship group, turning a love for baseball and beach life into a multi-platinum career that redefined modern country music.
Born in Ormond Beach, Florida, Brian Kelley’s musical foundation was built on a series of local exchanges. As a teenager, his sister introduced him to country music by playing tapes for him during trips to the beach—a trade for him washing her car. This early exposure merged with his experience leading worship at his church and a growing passion for guitar. Despite his athletic prowess, music served as a functional shift for him; during his tenure on the baseball teams of Florida State University and Daytona State College, he composed tracks while remaining on the sidelines.
The turning point came in 2007 at Belmont University. While in a campus worship group, Kelley met Tyler Hubbard. The two began writing together and performing 'writers rounds' throughout Nashville. Their breakthrough was a mix of grassroots hustle and industry luck: they independently released their first EP in 2010 before being discovered at a county fair by Joey Moi, the producer for Nickelback. After two years of polishing their sound, they signed with Republic Nashville and Big Machine Label Group following the success of their debut single, 'Cruise.'
The impact of 'Cruise' was historic. It became the best-selling country digital song of all time, moving over 7 million units and spending 24 weeks at number one on Hot Country songs. Even as the duo eventually took an indefinite hiatus in 2022 to pursue solo paths, their influence remains structural. Kelley has since launched Nashville South Records and a stage musical, 'May We All,' while maintaining his 'Beach Cowboy' persona, bridging the gap between Florida surf culture and Nashville's commercial heart.
