From track champion to NFL record-breaker and collegiate offensive coordinator
In short: Before he was a strategist on the sidelines, Brian Hartline was a dual-threat athlete. A former state champion in hurdles, he transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver, eventually setting a franchise record for receiving yards in a single game and leading the NFL in receiving yards.
Brian Hartline’s athletic versatility began in high school at GlenOak, where he competed in both football and track. In 2005, he secured state championships in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. He initially played as a quarterback before making his positional switch. This versatility was evident during his high school years in Plain Township, Ohio.
After a standout collegiate career at Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes reach the 2008 BCS National Championship Game, Hartline entered the NFL in 2009. Selected in the fourth round by the Miami Dolphins, he quickly established himself as a premier target. His 2012 season was particularly notable; after becoming the team's number-one receiver, he set a Dolphins franchise record with 253 receiving yards in a single game against the Arizona Cardinals.
This performance propelled him to lead the NFL in receiving yards that season, making him only the eighth player in Dolphins history to surpass the 1,000-yard milestone. Despite a career marked by significant milestones—including a 5-year, $31 million contract with Miami in 2013—Hartline has since pivoted toward coaching. After serving in various capacities at Ohio State, including offensive coordinator, he was appointed head coach at the University of South Florida for the 2026 season. His professional journey included a stint with the Cleveland Browns. Additionally, he has maintained business interests by operating two convenience stores in Columbus.
