In short: In 1978, a non-power hitter batting ninth in the lineup did the unthinkable. With a borrowed bat, Bucky Dent struck a three-run home run at Fenway Park, handing the Boston Red Sox a devastating loss and securing the division for the New York Yankees.

Bucky Dent's 1978 home run remains one of the most iconic moments in Major League Baseball history. Playing for the New York Yankees, Dent was not a known power hitter; in his entire 12-year career, he hit only 40 home runs. On that night at Fenway Park, however, he used a bat borrowed from center fielder Mickey Rivers to hit a crucial seventh-inning shot that gave the Yankees a 3–2 lead in an American League East tie-breaker game.

The impact of the shot was profound. A 5–4 victory secured the division championship for the Yankees, relegating the Red Sox to post-season exclusion following their loss of a huge July advantage. For generations of Boston fans, the moment was so painful that he became known by the moniker "Bucky Fucking Dent."

Despite his limited power, Dent was a highly reliable shortstop. While Tommy John noted that Dent lacked elite range and a strong throwing arm, he was praised for his ability to position himself to catch balls missed by others. Dent's success in 1978 extended beyond that single shot; he was named the World Series MVP after batting .417 during the Yankees' championship victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dent's career spanned from 1973 to 1984, during which he played for the Chicago White Sox, the Yankees, the Texas Rangers, and the Kansas City Royals. He earned two World Series rings in 1977 and 1978, cementing his legacy as a vital component of the Yankees' success during that era.
