The winningest manager in history to never touch a World Series title
In short: Buck Showalter is a master of building contenders from bottom-tier rosters with remarkable speed. Despite his many accolades, he remains the winningest active manager never to reach a World Series. He famously departed both the Yankees and Diamondbacks just before those clubs won championships in the seasons immediately following his exit.
Buck Showalter has built perennial contenders out of bottom-tier rosters with remarkable speed. He led the Arizona Diamondbacks to their first-ever playoff appearance just two years after the team's inception in 1998. Similarly, he transformed the Baltimore Orioles from a team with the worst record in the majors in 2010 to a postseason contender that won its first AL East title in 17 years by 2014. He managed the Oneonta Yankees to 114 wins over two seasons in 1985. He also led the Fort Lauderdale Yankees to an 85–53 record in 1987. His father, William Nathaniel Showalter II, was a high school principal and a former college football fullback.
However, his career is defined by a striking paradox: he has never appeared in a World Series. Despite being the winningest active manager to lack a ring since Dusty Baker's 2022 victory, Showalter has a history of departing teams just before they reach the summit. He left the Yankees and Diamondbacks immediately preceding seasons in which both teams went on to win the World Series. In both instances, his teams won the championship in the very next year following his departure. He stood up for his players during the 1994 strike, which impacted his tenure with the Yankees. He chose to honor a handshake deal with Arizona over a late offer from George Steinbrenner. The Diamondbacks fired him in 2000 because they wanted a lighter touch.
His accolades are peerless in their diversity. Showalter is the only manager to win Manager of the Year awards with four different teams across four different decades. He has earned three American League and one National League Manager of the Year honors. His tactical style is noted for being a He was the third manager to win four such awards. He was also the seventh person to win the honor in both leagues. He reached the postseason six times during his 22-season career.
disciplinarian He was the only full-season manager in 2022 not to be ejected from any games. He achieved a 78.6% overturn percentage that year. He wore number 26 in Baltimore to honor Johnny Oates.
