In short: From a French studio pitch in 2013 to a high-octane spy thriller in South Korea, the journey of Butterfly is a masterclass in creative pivot. It took six years and multiple international shifts before this Amazon Prime series finally hit the screens.

The path to 'Butterfly' was anything but linear. In 2013, creator Arash Amel first pitched the property as a television series with a French studio. The original vision was set in Europe, featuring two American leads and a European backdrop. However, due to a lack of interest from American networks in foreign co-productions at the time, that project collapsed. By 2016, the rights moved to a UK broadcaster where the setting shifted again to London, involving director Baran bo Odar. This version was eventually scrapped in 2018 following a major restructuring of the network.

The project found its modern identity in 2019 when Daniel Dae Kim and his company, 3AD, partnered with Amazon MGM Studios. Kim made the pivotal decision to move the setting from the West to South Korea. This shift was intentional; Kim sought to explore Asian American themes through an international cast and a Korean crew. While the original graphic novel debuted in September 2014, the series adaptation underwent significant structural changes. For instance, when Kim signed on as a lead actor, the narrative focus shifted from being primarily about his character's daughter, Rebecca, to a balanced dual focus on both father and daughter.

Production was an ambitious logistical undertaking. Filming occurred between February and June 2024 across 20 different cities in South Korea, including Seoul, Busan, and Andong. To maintain authenticity, the production employed an almost entirely Korean crew, with only three key positions—director, director of photography, and camera operator—being American. The series premiered on August 13, 2025, achieving significant commercial success by hitting #1 on Amazon's US top 10 chart and #2 globally. Despite this performance, the series was canceled in October 2025 after just one season, leaving fans on a cliffhanger.

Beyond the action, the production sparked dialogue on industry standards. Daniel Dae Kim used the project to address nationality-based casting for Asian roles in Hollywood. Labeling these demands an 'overcorrection', he contended that ethnic restrictions on casting are unnecessary for roles portraying a general Asian American life. This perspective highlights the series' role not just as entertainment, but as a vehicle for navigating complex cultural identities in global media.
