The spy thriller that ended before its story could truly unfold
In short: Released in late 2024, the Indian spin-off Citadel: Honey Bunny promised a high-stakes expansion of a global franchise. Yet, despite its intricate web of double agents and high-tech gadgets, the series met an abrupt end, leaving its central characters suspended in a permanent state of conflict.
Directed by Raj & DK, the series serves as an Indian Hindi-language spin-off to the American Citadel series. It follows the lives of Raahi "Bunny" Gambhir, a Bollywood stunt double living a double life as a spy, and Hanimandakini "Honey" Raj, a struggling actress with royal lineage in Andhra Pradesh. The narrative weaves through international espionage, involving a high-tech tracking device known as Armada and a complex web of loyalties involving an operative known as Baba.
The plot is defined by shifting allegiances and deep-seated betrayals. Zooni Shatsang, the Director of Citadel India, is revealed to have assisted Baba's escape from custody as far back as 1999. The tension escalates as characters navigate missions in locations ranging from Belgrade to Mumbai, dealing with the fallout of assassinations and the pursuit of powerful technology. The series features a heavy focus on family ties, with Bunny and Honey attempting to protect their daughter, Nadia, from the very intelligence networks they inhabit.
Despite its ambitious scope, the series' journey was short-lived. While filming wrapped in July 2023 after being shot in Serbia and India, the show faced cancellation in April 2025 after only one season. Producers intended to integrate the show's storylines into the second season of the original Citadel series. While critics offered a mixed reception—notably an 80% positive rating from a small group of 15 reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes—the show's sudden conclusion leaves its climactic battle between Bunny and the recruit Kedar KD unresolved.
