In short: Born Raymond Ian Burns, the musician known as Captain Sensible co-founded the Damned and became a punk legend. Yet, his career took an unexpected turn in 2006 when he launched the Blah! Party, a protest movement that utilized direct democracy, crisp sponsorships, and a rolling manifesto to challenge British politics.

Raymond Ian Burns adopted his ironic stage name after a 1976 tour of France, where a singer observed him covered in food scraps and beer, jokingly calling him 'Captain Sensible.' Despite this reputation for wild antics, his life shifted in 1981 after recording an EP at Dial House, the commune of the anarcho-punk band Crass. This experience led him to adopt vegetarianism and embrace pacifist ideals, themes he later explored in songs like 'Wot! No Meat?'.

In September 2006, the musician founded the Blah! Party to provide a channel for public dissatisfaction with the status quo. The party was built on direct democracy, allowing members to vote on policies via a website to create a 'rolling manifesto.' Its early platform included opposing the Iraq War and ID cards, while simultaneously campaigning against 'chav culture' and the idolization of celebrities. The venture was unconventional, securing a sponsorship deal with Seabrook Crisps that saw party details printed on snack packets.

The party's financial and organizational path was volatile. It received over £168,000 in the final quarter of 2006, yet struggled to gain electoral traction; candidates in 2007 and 2008 garnered fewer than 70 votes each. By December 2008, the party ended its association with its PR firm, Propaganda, and de-registered as a political party to function instead as a protest group. Throughout these political experiments, Burns remained a fixture of the music scene, continuing to record and tour with the Damned and various solo projects, while maintaining his lifelong interests as a trainspotter and Crystal Palace FC supporter.
