In short: Before he was a Major League star, Carl Crawford was a multi-sport phenom. He held scholarship offers from powerhouse football programs like Nebraska and USC, but a strategic decision to focus solely on baseball changed the trajectory of his life and the history of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Born in Houston's Fifth Ward in 1981, Crawford was a standout athlete at Jefferson Davis High School. He opted for baseball despite having basketball scholarship offers to play point guard at UCLA and football opportunities at Nebraska, USC, Oklahoma, Florida, and Tulsa. This decision proved pivotal; after his sophomore year, he began working with former number one pick Willie Ansley, who eventually advised him to skip his senior year of basketball to preserve his knees for baseball.

Crawford's professional career was defined by unprecedented speed and consistency. During his nine years with the Tampa Bay Rays, he became one of the most feared baserunners in the league, leading the American League in both stolen bases and triples on four separate occasions. Matching the distinction held by Hall-of-Famer Rogers Hornsby, he uniquely raised his home run counts and batting average annually for five years running.

His statistical dominance reached a peak in the modern era. A modern-era record was tied in 2009 when he swiped six bases during a single match against the Boston Red Sox. Alongside Ty Cobb, he remains the sole player to record 400 stolen bases and 100 triples before turning 30. By the time he retired in 2016, Crawford had amassed 480 career stolen bases and a .290 batting average over 1,716 games, leaving a legacy as one of the most complete outfielders of his generation.
