In short: He once became a textbook example of social media pitfalls, yet he rose to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship. Follow the career of a quarterback whose path through the NFL, XFL, and beyond has been defined by both immense talent and unexpected turns.

Cardale Jones's collegiate career was marked by both high-stakes victory and public scrutiny. While redshirting at Ohio State, a controversial tweet regarding academics led to a one-underrun suspension and even inclusion in a University of Mississippi textbook on social media best practices. Jones later clarified the post was a momentary lapse of judgment fueled by frustration over his studies. Before his time in the Big Ten, he was a three-star recruit from Cleveland's Glenville High School. He also earned letters in both track and basketball during his high school years.

Despite these setbacks, Jones delivered one of the most impactful stretches in recent college football history. Stepping in for an injured J.T. Barrett, he led the #6 ranked Buckeyes to a 59–0 victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship. He followed this with a 42–35 win over #1 ranked Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl and a 42–20 victory over Oregon to secure the College Football Playoff National Championship, where he recorded 280 all-purpose yards. During his 2015 campaign, he achieved personal bests in completions and passing yards during a matchup against Maryland. He eventually decided to bypass the 2015 NFL draft to finish his degree in African-American Studies.

His professional trajectory saw him drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills. Over the following years, Jones moved through several leagues, including stints with the Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and the DC Defenders of the XFL, where he led the team to a 27–0 shutout victory. After periods in the CFL and IFL, Jones transitioned toward coaching and community roles, eventually accepting a position as a varsity quarterbacks coach in Connecticut in 2026. His professional journey included time with the Edmonton Elks and the Massachusetts Pirates. Most recently, he joined the Columbus Aviators as a community ambassador for the UFL.
