In short: While the invasion of Poland in 1939 serves as the immediate spark, historians often view the conflict as a continuation of unresolved tensions from 1918. Deep resentment over the Treaty of Versailles and the economic instability of the Great Depression created a volatile environment that allowed totalitarian regimes to rise.

The geopolitical landscape following World War I was fragile. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles imposed heavy reparations and military restrictions on Germany, fueling intense revanchism within the Weimar Republic. French leadership, fearing a resurgent Germany, sought security through these punitive measures, including coal payments and the demilitarization of the Rhineland. However, these demands were widely viewed by Germans as unreasonable, creating a cycle of bitterness that weakened the international order.

As the Great Depression devastated global economies in the 1930s, faith in liberal democracy waned. In Germany, this instability paved the way for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to seize power in 1933. Their ideology, centered on antisemitism, the pursuit of living space, and the elimination of perceived racial inferiors, drove an aggressive foreign policy that the League of Nations proved unable to contain. Similar patterns of militarism emerged in Japan and Italy, further destabilizing the global status quo.

The path to war became inevitable as diplomatic efforts, such as the 1938 Munich Conference, failed to curb Hitler’s territorial ambitions. By 1939, Hitler sought to neutralize Soviet resistance through the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, which secretly partitioned Poland. When Germany invaded on September 1, 1939, the existing mutual assistance treaties forced Great Britain and France to declare war. This conflict would eventually claim 40,000,000 to 50,000,000 lives, fundamentally shifting global power toward the United States and the Soviet Union.
