In short: Spanning from 1939 to 1945, World War II was the largest and bloodiest conflict in human history. It was not merely a series of battles, but a total war that fundamentally shifted the world's balance of power toward the United States and the Soviet Union.

The war's origins can be traced back to the unsettled disputes of World War I, which had experienced an uneasy twenty-year hiatus. By early 1939, Adolf Hitler was determined to occupy Poland. To facilitate this, Germany entered into secret negotiations with the Soviet Union, resulting in the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact signed on August 23–24. A secret protocol within this agreement even outlined the division of Poland, with Germany taking the western third and the USSR taking the eastern two-thirds.

The actual outbreak of hostilities followed a rapid sequence of events in late August 1939. Following Hitler's command to invade Poland on August 31, Germany faced declarations of war from France and Great Britain on September 3, spreading the struggle worldwide. Two primary factions fought: the Allies, consisting of China, the Soviet Union, the United States, Great Britain, and France, and the Axis, which featured Japan, Italy, and Germany.

The scale of the violence was unprecedented, with an estimated 40,000,000 to 50,000,000 deaths. This 'total nature' of the war meant that civilian populations became direct targets of aerial bombing. Beyond the battlefield, the era was marked by horrific ideological campaigns, including the Nazi regime's war of extermination against Jews and Slavs, and the Soviet campaign of terror against Ukrainians and Poles. The war's conclusion saw the rise of the US and USSR as dominant powers and established the framework for the modern United Nations Security Council.
