How an Italian guard rose from youth championships to the WNBA expansion draft
In short: From a standout seventeen-year-old in Italy to a WNBA standout, Cecilia Zandalasini’s career is a masterclass in versatility. After a historic EuroBasket debut, she has navigated elite leagues in Turkey, Italy, and the United States, eventually becoming a key selection for the Golden State Valkyries.
Born on 16 March 1996 in Broni, Italy, Zandalasini’s ascent began with Geas Basket, where she secured six Italian youth club championships. By age 17, during the 2013–14 season, she was already a scoring force, leading her team with 314 points across 20 games—an average of 15.7 points per game. During her time with Geas Basket, she established herself as a formidable guard. This early success laid the groundwork for her professional career.
Her international reputation was cemented at EuroBasket Women 2017. Averaging 19.0 points and 9.6 rebounds, she ranked second and third in those categories respectively, earning an All-Tournament Team spot. This performance was so impactful that FIBA.com's Jeff Taylor described it as the greatest FIBA EuroBasket Women debut in history. Her statistical dominance in that tournament remains a significant milestone. This feat helped solidify her status on the global stage.
Zandalasini's professional journey has been defined by high-stakes transitions. She has played for major clubs including PF Schio, Fenerbahçe, Virtus Bologna, and Galatasaray. In the WNBA, she experienced early success with the Minnesota Lynx, contributing to a championship victory, before being selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the 2024 expansion draft. She notably signed with the Turkish club Fenerbahçe in 2018. Later, she joined Virtus Bologna in May 2021.
Her career highlights the complexity of professional basketball, balancing club commitments with international duties. Whether acting as a primary scorer or a specialized sixth woman, her ability to adapt across different European and American leagues has made her a prominent figure in women's professional basketball. Her versatility was further demonstrated during her time with the Minnesota Lynx. She has since moved on to join the Golden State Valkyries.
