In short: When COVID-19 halted live gatherings in 2020, WWE had to reinvent the spectacle of professional wrestling. The result was the ThunderDome: a high-tech arena where fans were replaced by virtual avatars and thousands of LED screens, creating a surreal, isolated environment for the final Clash of Champions.

The 2020 edition of Clash of Champions (also known as Gold Rush) faced significant logistical hurdles due to the pandemic. Originally slated for September 20 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the event was postponed after Governor Phil Murphy banned public gatherings of more than 50 people starting March 16, 2020. WWE eventually relocated the show to a bio-secure bubble at Orlando's Amway Center on September 27.

This 'ThunderDome' residency transformed the fan experience. Instead of a live crowd, the arena featured nearly 1,000 LED boards displaying virtual fans who could watch for free. To maintain the atmosphere, WWE mixed live arena audio with recorded chants from these digital spectators and utilized special effects to enhance wrestler entrances. Despite the isolation, the event maintained its core theme: defending all active main roster championships except for one.

The only title excluded was the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship, which was canceled hours before the show because the champions were not medically cleared to compete. The remaining eight matches featured high-stakes stipulations, including a triple threat ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship and an ambulance match between Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton. These results were predetermined by writers on the Raw and SmackDown brands, following storylines developed over weeks of weekly television.

The event serves as a landmark in sports entertainment history, illustrating how major promotions adapted to extreme public health restrictions. It bridged the gap between traditional live performance and digital streaming, utilizing technology to preserve the 'spectacle' when physical proximity became impossible.
