In short: Born from a single one-time event in Dublin, Celtic Woman transformed into a global phenomenon. They didn't just top the charts; they shattered a long-standing record held by Andrea Bocelli, staying at the summit of the Billboard World Music chart for an unprecedented 68 weeks.

Celtic Woman was established in 2004 by producer Sharon Brown and musical director David Downes. To form the group, Downes—who previously led the Irish production Riverdance—hired five Irish women who had no prior history of performing as a unit: Máiréad Nesbitt on fiddle, plus vocalists Lisa Kelly, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, Órla Fallon, and Chloë Agnew. Their debut performance at The Helix in Dublin on September 15, 2004, served as the catalyst for a career that sold over nine million records worldwide.

The group's rapid ascent was fueled by extensive publicity on PBS in the United States throughout 2005. Their eponymous debut album reached No. 1 on the Billboard World Music chart in March 2005. By July 2006, the album had stayed at the top spot for 68 weeks, officially breaking Andrea Bocelli's record for the longest chart-topping longevity in that category. The album eventually held the top position for a total of 81 weeks.

The ensemble's history is defined by a rotating membership and a blend of traditional Celtic tunes with modern songs. Over the years, the lineup has shifted frequently due to solo projects, maternity leave, and family commitments. Notable transitions include Méav Ní Mhaolchatha's multiple departures and returns, and the addition of members like Hayley Westenra, Lynn Hilary, and Susan McFadden. Despite these changes, the group has maintained its status as a major musical export, earning the Billboard World Album Artist of the Year title six times.

Beyond live tours across North America, Europe, and Japan, the group has expanded into diverse media. With over 20 albums issued so far, these performers also composed the 2010 score for the Wii title Endless Ocean: Adventures of the Deep. Their success remains a landmark example of how a single performance can be leveraged into a multi-decade international brand.
