The phoenix of Italian football rose from bankruptcy to glory
In short: When a historic club collapses into financial ruin, it often disappears forever. But in 2018, the city of Cesena refused to let its footballing identity die. They engineered a resurrection that saw a new entity climb back through the ranks of Italian football with remarkable speed.
In 2018, the historic Associazione Calcio Cesena (A.C. Cesena) collapsed into bankruptcy, threatening to erase decades of sporting heritage. To prevent this, a group of local businessmen orchestrated a 'phoenix' club strategy. They acquired an existing side, A.S.D. Romagna Centro, and rebranded it as Cesena F.C. in July 2018. This move allowed the community to maintain its footballing lineage while starting fresh from the lower tiers of the Italian pyramid.
The rebirth was characterized by immediate success. Starting in Serie D for the 2018–19 season, the new club won its first championship instantly. They spent the next five seasons competing in Serie C, navigating the grueling landscape of the third tier. This persistence culminated in the 2023–24 season, where they secured the Serie C Girone B championship, officially returning to Serie B exactly six years after their predecessor's financial demise.
Today, the club maintains its traditional identity as the 'bianconeri,' wearing black and white colors. They play at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi, a venue recognized for hosting significant events including Euro 2019 U-21 matches and major concerts. The story of Cesena F.C. serves as a blueprint for how community support and strategic restructuring can preserve cultural icons in the face of economic failure.
The transition was not without its complexities; while the new club took over the mantle, they eventually had to secure the specific image rights of the original A.C. Cesena to fully solidify their historical claim.
