Why the world’s earliest urban sites are facing an unprecedented existential crisis
In short: The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures is launching a new center to safeguard endangered archaeological sites. This initiative aims to systematically map and monitor historical locations currently threatened by rapid development and conflict.
The Chicago Center for Archaeological Heritage Preservation (CCAHP) represents a pioneering effort to protect the nonrenewable history of the world's first cities. While armed conflict and looting have severely impacted sites across regions like Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the most significant danger to these ancient locations is modern agricultural and urban expansion.
By systematically cataloging and monitoring these vulnerable links to our collective past, the center seeks to document sites before they are lost. This project marks the first time such a comprehensive approach has been applied to archaeological preservation on this scale.
