In short: In 2005, a Mexican football giant attempted to plant its flag in Southern California. Chivas USA was more than just a soccer club; it was an ambitious international branding experiment that eventually collapsed under the weight of controversy and shifting ownership.

Launched in 2005 as the eleventh Major League Soccer franchise, Chivas USA was designed as a 'little brother' to the legendary Mexican club C.D. Guadalajara. Owned by Jorge Vergara, the club shared the branding and identity of its Mexican parent, even adopting the 'Chiva'—or goat—nickname, symbolizing resilience. For nearly a decade, the club called the StubHub Center in Carson, California, its home. The team's early years saw various venues, including matches at Titan Stadium in Fullerton and Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara. The club's first presenting sponsor was the Mexican paint company Comex.

The club's history was marked by significant instability and legal friction. In 2012, Jorge Vergara and Angélica Fuentes acquired full control after purchasing the shares held by Lorenzo and Antonio Cué. This era was shadowed by a 2013 discrimination lawsuit filed by youth coaches Dan Calichman and Ted Chronopoulos, who alleged they were dismissed due to their lack of Latino heritage. Allegations also surfaced that staff were told they would be fired if they did not speak Spanish. The club's leadership underwent significant turnover, including the departure of president and CEO Shawn Hunter in late 2010. Even the team's jersey sponsors fluctuated, moving from Comex to the convenience store chain Extra.

On the pitch, the club struggled with consistency, cycling through four different coaches after the 2010 season alone. By early 2014, Major League Soccer stepped in to purchase the club from Vergara. While there were initial hopes for a rebrand, the club ultimately ceased operations following the 2014 regular season. The vacancy in the Los Angeles market was eventually filled by the arrival of Los Angeles FC in 2018, marking the end of the Chivas era in American soccer. The final blow came when a group of investors, including Peter Guber and Vincent Tan, agreed to a purchase price exceeding $100 million. This transition paved the way for the new expansion franchise to begin play in 2018.
