In short: Before becoming a major college head coach, Chris Klieman orchestrated one of the most remarkable runs in football history. By leading North Dakota State to five consecutive national championships, he achieved a level of collegiate success that remains unmatched by any other NCAA program in history.

Chris Klieman's ascent in the coaching ranks is defined by a transformative period at North Dakota State University. After serving as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, Klieman was promoted to head coach in 2014, becoming the 30th leader in the Bison program's history. His arrival coincided with an extraordinary era of dominance, specifically highlighted by the 2014 season. Despite losing 30 seniors and their starting quarterback, Klieman led the team to a 15–1 record and a national championship, marking the first time a Division I football program achieved four consecutive titles.

The momentum continued through 2015, when Klieman guided the Bison to a 13–2 record and their fifth consecutive national championship. This feat established a record for the most consecutive national titles by any NCAA football program. His tenure at North Dakota State also saw the team secure seven consecutive MVFC titles and multiple national championships between 2014 and 2018, including a decisive 17–13 victory over James Madison in the 2017 Championship Game.

In December 2018, Klieman transitioned to the highest level of collegiate coaching, succeeding the legendary Bill Snyder as the head coach at Kansas State University. His move was facilitated by Gene Taylor, who had previously served as the athletic director at North Dakota State. Klieman's tenure at Kansas State included a Big 12 Championship victory in 2022, secured via a 31–28 overtime win against TCU. He officially retired from coaching in December 2025, leaving behind a legacy that included 54 wins at Kansas State, the second-highest total in the school's history.
