In short: Randy Edsall is the winningest football coach in University of Connecticut history, having led the program through its most significant period of growth. His tenure saw the team transition from Division I-AA to the top tier of college football, setting a standard for both athletic performance and academic achievement.

Randy Edsall’s first tenure at the University of Connecticut, spanning from 1999 to 2010, is widely regarded as a period of unprecedented transformation. When he arrived, the program was competing at the Division I-AA level. Under his guidance, the Huskies successfully navigated the complex transition to Division I-A, becoming the first school to move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Championship Series as a Big East member. By 2002, the team was already competing as a full member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, securing six wins in its inaugural season.

The program's rise was marked by rapid milestones, including the 2003 opening of Rentschler Field and a surge in fan attendance. Edsall’s teams were notable not only for their on-field success—securing all three of the university's bowl wins during his time—but also for their commitment to academics. The program frequently maintained Academic Progress Rates above the national average, at one point leading all Division I-A public schools with a graduation rate exceeding 90 percent for its student-athletes. This balance of athletic competitiveness and academic rigor defined his initial era in Storrs.

Despite his success, Edsall’s departure for the University of Maryland following the 2011 Fiesta Bowl left a complex legacy. He later acknowledged that he wished he had handled that transition differently, recognizing the lingering hurt among fans and supporters. After coaching at Maryland from 2011 to 2015 and serving as a director for the Detroit Lions, he returned to UConn in 2017. Throughout his career, which began as a graduate assistant at Syracuse University, Edsall has remained a prominent figure in collegiate football, accumulating 74 wins during his first stint at UConn alone.
