How a university football program built a coaching factory and reached national prominence
In short: The University at Albany football program transformed from a modest club sport into a powerhouse that produced over 100 coaches and sent players to the NFL. Driven by the long-tenured Bob Ford, the Great Danes evolved from local obscurity to national playoff contenders, proving that sustained success requires deep institutional foundations.
The modern trajectory of Albany football traces back to 1970, when the university revived the sport as a club activity. Under the guidance of Bob Ford, who served as head coach until his retirement in 2013, the program achieved varsity status by 1973. Ford became the architect of a unique coaching factory, with more than 100 individuals who started their careers under his mentorship moving on to roles in high school, college, and professional football.
Success at the Division I level began in earnest during the 2000s. In 2002, the team secured its first Northeast Conference title, bolstered by record-breaking performances from running back Gary Jones. By 2006, the program shifted its recruitment strategy to include scholarships, a move that coincided with a historic victory over the University of Delaware. This era of growth culminated in 2011, when the Great Danes earned their first trip to the NCAA Division I Football Championship.
Following Ford's retirement, the program navigated a transition period before reaching new heights in 2023. Under head coach Greg Gattuso, the team finished with an 11-4 record and captured its first-ever Coastal Athletic Association title. The 2023 season saw the Great Danes advance to the FCS Semifinals, marking the furthest the program has ever progressed in the postseason. Beyond the field, the university's influence has extended to the NFL, notably through hosting the New York Giants' summer training camp for 16 years and producing drafted players like Kurt Campbell and Jared Verse.
