In short: Most players reach their international peak in their early twenties. But in 2001, Chris Powell achieved something remarkable. At the age of 31, he earned his first England cap, becoming the oldest debutant for the national team since 1954.

Chris Powell’s career is a study in longevity and late-stage excellence. Having played as a left-back, he represented several teams such as Leicester City, Watford, West Ham United, Charlton Athletic, Derby County and Southend United. While he began his professional path as a trainee at Crystal Palace in December 1987, it was his consistent performances at Charlton that eventually caught the eye of manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, leading to his historic call-up against Spain. His journey actually began in the youth ranks of Epsom & Ewell, where he played alongside Matt Elliott during the 1985–86 season. Before finding his footing at Charlton, he also spent time on loan at Aldershot, making 11 appearances.

Beyond his playing days, Powell transitioned into a highly respected manager and coach. His managerial tenure at Charlton Athletic saw significant success, including leading the club to the League One title and promotion to the Championship during the 2011–12 season. He also held managerial roles at Huddersfield Town and Southend United, and served as a caretaker manager at Derby County. His time at Southend United was particularly notable, where he earned the status of a cult hero following a popular BBC poll in 2004. He also achieved a unique distinction at Southend, becoming the only permanent manager in the club's history to win his first three matches.

Powell's influence extends far beyond the pitch. He served as the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association from 2005 until his retirement and was named an ambassador for England's 2018 World Cup bid. His versatility is evident in his coaching roles for the England national team under Gareth Southgate and his work within the Tottenham Hotspur Academy. His impact on football earned him an MBE appointment during the 2024 Birthday Honours. His coaching expertise has also seen him work in the Netherlands with ADO Den Haag. Additionally, he has found fame in popular culture, appearing as a co-commentator in all three seasons of the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.
