The loud, fast-talking voice that defined New York sports radio
In short: Known to millions as "Mad Dog," Chris Russo transformed sports broadcasting with a high-octane energy. From speech therapy sessions in Florida to a massive SiriusXM deal, his journey from a local radio host to a Hall of Fame personality is a masterclass in building a unique, unmistakable brand.
Born in Syosset, New York, on October 18, 1959, Christopher Michael Russo built a career defined by a distinctive, rapid-fire delivery. His journey was not without obstacles; while working for WKIS in Orlando between 1984 and 1987, his accent proved difficult for local listeners to understand, leading the station to send him to speech therapy twice a week.
Russo's most enduring legacy began at WFAN in New York City. After joining in December 1988, he was eventually paired with Mike Francesa to launch the iconic "Mike and the Mad Dog" show on September 5, 1989. The nickname "Mad Dog" was bestowed upon him by sports media critic Bob Raissman, who compared Russo's intense radio style to the professional wrestler Maurice Vachon.
In August 2008, Russo made the pivotal decision to leave WFAN to seek new opportunities, signing a five-year contract with SiriusXM. This deal, valued at approximately $3 million per year, allowed him to headline his own channel, Mad Dog Sports Radio, which launched on September 15, 2008. His influence extended to television as well, hosting MLB Network's "High Heat" from March 31, 2014, until 2024.
Russo's career is marked by high-stakes moments, including a 2023 wager involving the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Philadelphia Phillies. After predicting a Phillies victory and vowing to retire if the Diamondbacks won two consecutive games, Russo was forced to renege on his promise when the Diamondbacks advanced to the World Series, instead agreeing to wear a themed bikini in New York City.
