From Allman Brothers legend to Rolling Stones director and award-winning tree farmer.
In short: Chuck Leavell is a rare polymath who mastered the rock stage and the forest floor. After defining the sound of the Allman Brothers Band, he became the Rolling Stones' musical director. Simultaneously, he transformed into a national authority on sustainable forestry, proving that rock stardom and environmental stewardship can thrive together.
Born in 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama, Chuck Leavell began his musical journey as a self-taught pianist. His early career was defined by his tenure with the Allman Brothers Band, which he joined in 1972. His keyboard work became a hallmark of their 1973 album, Brothers and Sisters, particularly on the instrumental track Jessica. Following the band's dissolution in 1976, he formed the group Sea Level, before eventually securing his long-standing role as the principal touring keyboardist and musical director for the Rolling Stones in 1982.
Beyond the stage, Leavell cultivated an entirely different identity as a conservationist. In the early 1980s, he and his wife, Rose Lane Leavell, began managing land inherited in Twiggs County, Georgia. This evolved into Charlane Plantation, a 2500-acre award-winning tree farm. Their commitment to sustainable forestry earned them the title of National Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year in 1999. Leavell has since authored several books on the subject, including Forever Green and The Tree Farmer, and has advised lawmakers in Washington, D.C. on environmental policy.
Leavell’s dual life is bridged by his desire to educate and advocate. He co-founded The Mother Nature Network in 2009, which became the world's most visited independent environmental website, and launched the piano instructional platform IROCKU in 2011. Whether he is devising set lists for the Rolling Stones or discussing forest management with the Georgia Land Conservation Council, Leavell maintains a consistent focus on legacy and stewardship. His career was chronicled in the 2020 documentary Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man, which highlights his unique path from rock icon to a champion of the American forest.
