In short: In 1982, the Cincinnati Bearcats were relegated to the lower division due to low attendance. Decades later, they would shatter the glass ceiling of college football, becoming the first non-powerhouse team to ever reach the four-team College Football Playoff.

The history of Cincinnati Bearcats football is a study in extreme fluctuations. For much of the 20th century, the program operated largely as an independent, occasionally joining conferences like the Missouri Valley for twelve years. However, the 1980s brought significant hardship. Following an NCAA mandate requiring 20,000 average attendees for Division I-A status, Cincinnati's low numbers led to a demotion to Division I-AA for the 1982 and 1983 seasons.

The program's modern golden era was defined by coaching transitions and tactical innovation. In the early 1950s, Hall of Famer Sid Gillman utilized an aerial attack that would later revolutionize the professional game. Later, Brian Kelly led the Bearcats to an undefeated 2009 regular season and an Orange Bowl appearance. This period also saw the program achieve rare academic distinction; in 2009, Cincinnati was the only team in the BCS top 10 to post graduation rates exceeding 70% in both NCAA and federal metrics.

The ultimate breakthrough arrived under Luke Fickell. In 2021, the Bearcats achieved the unprecedented, becoming the first 'Group of Five' program to qualify for the College Football Playoff. This ascent was part of a broader period of dominance that included back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2018 and 2019. While the program has moved through various conferences—from Conference USA and the Big East to the American Athletic and now the Big 12—the core of its identity remains rooted in its long-standing Ohio rivalries, such as the 1888 clash with Miami.

Despite the highs, the program has faced periods of instability, including NCAA sanctions in the late 1980s and frequent coaching departures to larger programs. Yet, with over 600 victories and a home at Nippert Stadium since 1901, the Bearcats remain a cornerstone of the college football landscape.
