In short: The Ohio Bobcats football program has survived era-defining shifts, from the era of unprotected helmets to the modern bowl game era. With over 500 wins and a history of legendary coaches, the program's journey through the Mid-American Conference is a masterclass in collegiate endurance.

The program's origins are rooted in the late 19th century. While a 1892 conference attempt by Ohio University failed to produce a football schedule, the team officially debuted in 1894 with an 8–0 loss to Marietta College. The early years were marked by instability; between 1896 and 1905, the team saw a new head coach every single year, a period of flux that included the somber loss of a quarterback on the field in 1898.

The program's identity was forged under legendary figures like Don Peden and Bill Hess. Peden, who coached for 21 seasons starting in 1924, remains the gold standard with a .711 winning percentage. He led the Bobcats through the Buckeye Athletic Association era and into the MAC as a charter member in 1946. Later, Bill Hess brought a new level of prominence, leading the 1960 squad to a National Small College Championship with a perfect 10–0 record.

Modern success is defined by bowl game breakthroughs and record-breaking individual feats. After decades of near-misses, the Bobcats secured their first bowl victory on December 17, 2011, defeating Utah State. The program continues to produce spectacular moments, such as a 99-yard touchdown run by a quarterback against Buffalo in 2021, setting an NCAA record. From the 1968 offense that averaged 37.6 points per game to recent victories in the 2024 Cure Bowl, the Bobcats remain a cornerstone of the MAC.
