In short: Claude Jade was more than just a muse for François Truffaut. From starring in Alfred Hitchcock's Topaz to performing in the Soviet Union, her versatile career spanned international borders, defying the typical boundaries of a French starlet to become a global cinematic presence.

Claude Jade’s ascent to stardom was inextricably linked to the French New Wave. While appearing in a play by Pirandello, specifically Henri IV, director François Truffaut spotted her; she subsequently portrayed Christine Darbon in three of his movies: Bed and Board (1970), Stolen Kisses (1968), and Love on the Run (1979). Their relationship was famously intense; Truffaut once famously called her "French cinema’s little sweetheart," and though they were a couple, a planned marriage was called off the night before the wedding.

Her talent extended far beyond the French New Wave circle. At just 19, she was cast by Alfred Hitchcock in Topaz (1969). While Hitchcock noted her quiet demeanor, he also famously quipped about her potential behavior in a taxi. Despite being offered a seven-year contract by Universal Pictures, Jade chose to remain in France, preferring to work in her native language.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Jade's repertoire grew to include international productions in Italy, Belgium, Japan, and even the Soviet Union, where she lived for three years with her husband, diplomat Bernard Coste. Her work ranged from the mysterious adventure of The Island of Thirty Coffins (1979) to the historical drama of Lenin in Paris (1981).

Even in her final months, Jade remained dedicated to her craft. She performed in the play Célimène et le cardinal in August 2006, wearing a prosthetic eye due to the uveal melanoma that would eventually claim her life in December of that same year. Her legacy was cemented in 1998 when she was named a knight in the Légion d'honneur.
