The explosive rise and fall of NFL star Clinton Portis

In short: From a record-breaking rookie with the Denver Broncos to a dominant force in Washington, Clinton Portis defined an era of NFL rushing. Yet, the man who once stood alongside O.J. Simpson in statistical greatness eventually faced bankruptcy and federal fraud charges.

Clinton Portis entered the NFL in 2002, selected 51st overall by the Denver Broncos. He made an immediate impact, becoming the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,508 yards and 17 total touchdowns. He accomplished a unique milestone, joining just two other NFL players to gain 1,500+ yards in both his initial two seasons, maintaining a 5.5-yard average—the best for anyone with 500+ carries.

In 2004, Portis was traded to the Washington Redskins in a rare deal involving Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey. His time in Washington was marked by immense production and significant injury struggles. In 2005, he set a franchise record with 1,516 rushing yards, and in 2008, he was a leading candidate for the NFL MVP award after rushing for 1,487 yards. In 2008, he joined O.J. Simpson as the only other individual in NFL history to achieve two distinct runs of five straight games totaling 120+ rushing yards each.

The latter part of Portis's life has been defined by legal and financial turmoil. Following the mismanagement of his finances by advisors, which led to the loss of multiple homes, Portis filed for bankruptcy in December 2015. His legal troubles escalated in 2021 when he pleaded guilty to obtaining $99,264 in fraudulent medical benefits. In January 2022, he was sentenced to six months in prison and six months of home confinement.
