In short: In 2011, Club Atlético Belgrano achieved one of the most shocking results in Argentine football history. By drawing with a struggling River Plate, they triggered a sequence of events that relegated one of the country's biggest giants for the first time ever.

Founded on March 19, 1905, in Córdoba, Belgrano was named to honor Manuel Belgrano, an Argentine historical figure. The club’s identity is deeply tied to its roots; their colors were inspired by the flag created by Belgrano himself. Early on, the club had to fight for its very name, winning a 2–1 friendly against a homonymous rival to secure the right to be called Belgrano de Alberdi.

The club's history is defined by periods of intense regional dominance and dramatic national shifts. During the 1930s, they were a powerhouse in the Liga Cordobesa, winning every championship from 1933 to 1937 except for one year. They even toured Bolivia in 1938, where they famously dismantled Club Bolívar with a 6–0 victory. This era of success eventually gave way to the 'Quinteto de Oro,' an attacking line considered the best forward group in Córdoba's football history between 1940 and 1957.

The most polarizing moment in their narrative occurred on June 26, 2011. After winning a first-leg playoff 2–0 against River Plate, Belgrano drew 1–1 at the Estadio Monumental. Because of contemporary 'sporting advantage' regulations, this stalemate relegated River Plate to the second tier for once—an outcome triggering huge unrest and marking a significant moment in Argentine athletic lore.

While they spent decades navigating between divisions, Belgrano reached a pinnacle on May 24, 2026. The club clinched its inaugural Primera División trophy by beating River Plate 3–2 during the Torneo Apertura final, as Nicolás Fernández netted two goals late on to grab a crown missed for 121 years.
