How a fullback became the first white 1,000-yard rusher since 1985
In short: In 2010, Peyton Hillis achieved a feat rarely seen in the NFL. After being traded from Denver to Cleveland, the former seventh-round pick exploded for over 1,000 rushing yards, breaking a drought for white running backs that had lasted twenty-five years.
Peyton Hillis's journey to NFL stardom was anything but linear. A seventh-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft, Hillis spent his first two seasons with the Denver Broncos, where he served as a fullback and eventually became the team's leading rusher in 2008 with 343 yards and five touchdowns. However, a season-ending hamstring injury—caused by a hit from Kansas City's Jarrad Page and Brandon Carr—stalled his momentum and led to a decline in playing time during 2009. During his time in Denver, he was often utilized as a blocker for other players. He even earned several weekly honours, such as being named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.
Everything changed in 2010 when Hillis was traded to the Cleveland Browns. Stepping into a starting role due to injuries to teammates, he delivered a career-defining season. Since Craig James in 1985, he was the initial white running back to exceed 1,000 rushing yards during one season. His performance in Cleveland was so impressive that he earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award. He also joined Marshall Faulk as one of the few players to record massive yardage in both rushing and receiving during a single game.
His dominance was so pronounced that he was selected as the Madden NFL 12 cover athlete, defeating Michael Vick with 66 percent of the vote. Despite this peak, Hillis's career was marked by volatility. Following difficulties with injuries and contract talks, he joined the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs. He retired in 2015 on medical advice due to a history of concussions. Beyond the field, Hillis has faced significant personal challenges, including a critical medical emergency in early 2023 after saving family members from drowning. Before his retirement, he had stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the New York Giants. He also made a brief appearance in the horror film The Hunting, where he played a werewolf.
