How a hockey headline inspired a Canadian hardcore punk legend
In short: What began as a side project in Winnipeg in 2001 transformed into a global force in hardcore punk. Named after a newspaper headline regarding Mario Lemieux's return to the NHL, Comeback Kid has navigated lineup shifts, international tours, and label changes to define a genre.
Andrew Neufeld and Jeremy Hiebert, ex-Figure Four musicians, established Comeback Kid in March 2001, initially planning it as a secondary venture with Kyle Profeta and Scott Wade. The band's identity was cemented by their name, a nod to the sports journalism surrounding hockey star Mario Lemieux's return to the National Hockey League. By August 2002, the group had secured a deal with Facedown Records, following the release of a six-song demo earlier that year.
The band's trajectory has been marked by significant evolution and personnel changes. In February 2005, they moved to Victory Records for the release of Wake the Dead, an era that saw Scott Wade depart, leading Neufeld to take over vocal duties. Over the decades, the lineup has seen members like guitarist Casey Hjelmberg depart in 2012, and drummer Kyle Profeta leave in 2014 to pursue culinary arts in South Africa. The group has also experienced periods of hiatus, such as the short break taken at the end of 2007.
Despite these shifts, their discography has remained prolific, spanning seven studio albums including 2022's Heavy Steps and 2017's Outsider. Their influence extends beyond music into literature, with songs like 'Die Knowing' appearing in Augusto de Brito's 2016 novel Devaneio. As they approach milestones like the 20th anniversary of Wake the Dead, the band continues to tour extensively across North America, Europe, and beyond, maintaining a presence in the global hardcore scene.
