In short: Colt Brennan was a statistical phenomenon, shattering NCAA records and leading the nation in scoring. Yet, his journey from a college superstar to an NFL draft pick was marked by legal struggles, a devastating car crash, and a traumatic brain injury that changed him forever.

During his tenure at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Brennan became one of the most prolific passers in college football history. In 2006, he led the nation in total offense with 4,455 yards and 35 touchdowns. He followed this in 2007 by breaking the major college record for touchdown passes, surpassing the mark of 121 set by BYU's Ty Detmer in 1991. By the end of his collegiate career, Brennan had accumulated 136 touchdowns responsible for, ranking second all-time at that time.

His ascent was not without significant controversy. In early 2004, while at the University of Colorado, Brennan was convicted of felony burglary and trespassing following an incident in a female student's dorm room. Although a guilty verdict for unlawful sexual contact was vacated due to lack of evidence, the incident led to his dismissal from the Colorado football team. He eventually rebuilt his career at Saddleback College before finding success under coach June Jones at Hawaii.

The trajectory of Brennan's career shifted dramatically following a car crash in Hawai'i on November 19, 2010. The accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, and a broken collarbone. Brennan later noted that the injury, specifically in an area governing impulse and emotion, made him feel like a different person. Despite his immense talent—including being a sixth-place Heisman finalist in 2006—he never played in a regular-season NFL game, despite being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round in 2008.

Brennan's professional journey saw him move through various leagues, including the NFL, the United Football League, the Canadian Football League, and the Arena Football League. He passed away on May 11, 2021.
