In short: What began as an 18th-century French novel evolved into a 1999 cult film, before enduring decades of failed pilots and retoolings. The latest attempt to revive the manipulative world of Cruel Intentions has finally arrived, but its stay on our screens was remarkably brief.

The lineage of Cruel Intentions is a study in literary and cinematic adaptation. The DNA of the story traces back to Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel, Les Liaisons dangereuses. This foundation was reimagined for the 1999 film directed by Roger Kumble, which served as the basis for the recent Amazon Prime Video series. The television iteration, created by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, shifts the setting to the elite social circles of Manchester College in Washington, D.C.

The path to the screen was fraught with creative hurdles. In 1999, Fox initially planned a television adaptation, but the project was canceled due to creative concerns, leading to the 2000 direct-to-video prequel, Cruel Intentions 2. Years later, in 2015, NBC developed a pilot featuring the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar, but ultimately passed on the project. It wasn't until 2021 that Amazon announced a new development for Amazon Freevee, with Neal H. Moritz returning as an executive producer.

Despite securing a series order in April 2023 and beginning filming in Toronto in June 2023, the series faced a difficult reception. Upon its premiere on November 21, 2024, critics were largely unimpressed; Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 24% approval rating, with critics noting it lacked the transgressive impact of the original. The saga reached a sudden conclusion in March 2025, when Amazon Prime Video canceled the series after just one season.
