In short: In 1938, Cuba became the first Caribbean nation to play in a FIFA World Cup. They didn't just participate; they fought through a replay to reach the quarter-finals, a feat achieved by only three other CONCACAF teams in history.

Cuba's golden era in international football began in the 1930s. Under manager José Tapia, the team played its first international match on 16 March 1930 at the Central American and Caribbean Games, defeating Jamaica 3–1. Following a 7–0 victory over Honduras four days later, Cuba established itself as a regional force, winning a gold medal at the 1930 Central American and Caribbean Games.

The pinnacle of their success arrived during the 1938 World Cup in France. After a controversial decision left many South American nations withdrawing, Cuba qualified by default. In a thrilling round of 16 encounter, Cuba defeated Romania 2–1 in a replay after an initial 3–3 draw. This victory propelled them to the quarter-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by Sweden in an 8–0 defeat.

Since that historic run, the team has struggled to return to the world stage. While they have seen regional success, such as winning the Caribbean Cup in 2012, their recent history has been complicated by player defections. Throughout tournaments like the Gold Cup and Nations League, numerous players have chosen to remain in the United States or Canada, creating a persistent challenge for the Asociación de Fútbol de Cuba, which was founded in 1924.

Despite these hurdles, Cuba remains a significant name in CONCACAF history. They have reached the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup three times, specifically in 2003, 2013, and 2015, proving that the nation's footballing legacy remains a vital part of the Caribbean sporting identity.
