From third overall pick to NFL journeyman: the resilient career of Dante Fowler
In short: After being selected third overall in the 2015 NFL draft, Dante Fowler’s rookie season ended before it even began. A devastating ACL tear on his very first day of training camp set the stage for a career defined by immense physical talent, high-stakes contracts, and constant reinvention across the league.
Dante Fowler's professional trajectory began with immense promise. A $15.3 million signing bonus was part of the four-year, $23.5 million fully guaranteed deal he inked after being picked by Jacksonville in 2015. However, an ACL injury sustained on May 8, 2015, during his first opening drill of mini-camp, forced him to miss his entire debut season. He finally made his NFL debut on September 11, 2016, against the Green Bay Packers. Before entering the professional ranks, he was a standout athlete at Lakewood High School, excelling in both track and football. During his time in track, he achieved a personal best shot put distance of 14.32 meters.
Fowler's professional journey includes stints with the Jaguars, Rams, Falcons, Cowboys, and Commanders. His ability to adapt to different defensive schemes was often driven by his relationship with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, whom he reunited with at both Atlanta and Dallas. In 2019, while with the Rams, Fowler demonstrated his explosive potential by recording 11.5 sacks and 58 tackles in a single season. His versatility was evident during his college years at the University of Florida, where he transitioned to the outside linebacker position as a freshman. During his junior season in 2014, he even reduced his body weight from 277 to 261 pounds to increase his explosiveness.
Fowler's career has not been without significant off-field and legal complexities. In 2017, he faced charges in St. Petersburg for battery and criminal mischief following a confrontation involving a driver's comment. Furthermore, a 2019 grievance revealed that the Jaguars had improperly fined him over $700,000 for missing certain medical appointments, an incident linked to the departure of Jaguars executive Tom Coughlin. Despite these hurdles, Fowler has continued to find roles as a pass-rushing specialist, recently signing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2026. The legal issues from 2017 involved an altercation where Fowler struck a man and threw a bag of alcohol into a lake. He eventually entered a no contest plea in 2018, resulting in a fine and probation.
