From record-breaking collegiate returner to the journeyman life of the NFL
In short: Dante Pettis entered the NFL as a standout specialist with a record-breaking collegiate career. Since being drafted in 2018, his journey has been defined by movement across multiple franchises, navigating injuries, and proving his value as a versatile wide receiver and return specialist across several seasons.
Dante Garrison Pettis, born October 23, 1995, first made his mark at the University of Washington. During his tenure with the Huskies, he evolved from a freshman contributor into a consensus All-American. A historic 2017 campaign saw him tally seven touchdowns and 761 yards across 63 receptions, alongside an NCAA-record number of career punt return scores.
The 2018 NFL draft saw the San Francisco 49ers pick Pettis during the second round, as the fourth wide receiver off the board. His rookie season showed immediate impact, highlighted by a touchdown catch in his debut against the Minnesota Vikings, though a knee injury eventually landed him on injured reserve on December 29, 2018. He finished that inaugural year with 27 receptions and five touchdowns.
Pettis' NFL career has since become a testament to professional resilience. His career includes time with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, New York Giants, and the 49ers. His time with the Giants in 2020 included a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list, while his time with the Bears and Saints involved navigating various injuries and roster movements. Despite the volatility of being waived, re-signed, or placed on practice squads, Pettis has continued to find opportunities, most recently appearing for the Saints in 2025.
The athlete's professional lineage is notable; his father, Gary, played in Major League Baseball and coached for the Houston Astros, while his cousin, Austin, also played in the NFL.
