In short: He was a cult icon known for his distinctive hair, yet his legacy is defined by silverware. From the Bundesliga to the heights of European glory, Dante's journey through football's elite is a masterclass in longevity and defensive excellence.

Dante Bonfim Costa Santos, known simply as Dante, built a career defined by defensive reliability across Europe's top leagues. After developing in the Juventude youth system in 2001, the Brazilian centre-back moved to France in 2004 to join Lille. His path through the continent took him to Belgium, where he won the Pro League with Standard Liège, and eventually to Germany, where he became a beloved figure at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

At Mönchengladbach, Dante became a cult hero, with fans famously wearing large afro wigs to honor him. His performances in the Bundesliga eventually earned him a €4.7 million move to Bayern Munich in 2012. His time at Bayern saw him conquer club football, securing nine trophies across domestic and international competitions, notably a Champions League trophy. During a historic treble-winning campaign, his defensive unit set records for the most clean sheets and fewest goals conceded in a single Bundesliga season.

Dante's international career was equally significant, earning his Brazil debut in 2013 under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. He was part of the squad that won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and represented Brazil at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Though his final appearance for the national team came during the 7–1 defeat to Germany, his club career continued to defy age.

In the twilight of his playing days, Dante moved to Nice, where he played for ten seasons and served as captain. Notable feats included his appearance in a Coupe de France final while aged 42, setting a record for the competition's oldest participant. Upon retiring in 2026, he made history by becoming the first Brazilian head coach at Bayern Munich, taking charge of Bayern Munich II.
