In short: Darshan’s path to becoming one of Kannada cinema's highest-paid stars was anything but linear. It began with a defiant move into theater training against his father's wishes, followed by years as a projectionist and assistant cameraman before he finally stepped into the spotlight.

Born Hemanth Kumar in 1977 to actor Thoogudeepa Srinivas, Darshan’s early career was shaped by familial legacy. Despite his father's reluctance toward film acting, Darshan enrolled in Ninasam, a theater training institute in Shimoga, in 1995. This foundation preceded a humble start where he worked as a projectionist and an assistant cameraman for cinematographer B. C. Gowrishankar before landing minor roles in television soaps and cartoons.

His cinematic breakthrough arrived in 2002 with the film Majestic, which transitioned him from bit parts to a leading man. By 2004, he established himself as a sandalwood mainstay with Kalasipalya. His career reached a critical artistic milestone in 2012 with Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna; his portrayal of the 19th-century warrior earned him both the Karnataka State Film Award and a Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Beyond acting, Darshan expanded into production in 2006 with Thoogudeepa Productions and later distribution in 2013. However, his public persona has been marked by significant controversy. This includes legal battles regarding domestic violence in 2011, allegations of animal law violations in 2023, and a high-profile murder case involving Renuka Swamy that led to his arrest in June 2024. Despite these complexities, he remains a dominant commercial force, recently achieving major success with the 2024 film Kaatera.

His influence extends into philanthropy and politics; he successfully campaigned for various parties in 2023 and 2024 elections and raised Rs.1 crore to rescue Karnataka's zoos during the COVID-19 pandemic.
