The unheralded fullback who changed the way the NFL recognizes greatness
In short: Daryl 'Moose' Johnston spent his career clearing paths for others, often overlooked by traditional statistics. Yet, his impact was so profound that the NFL had to create a new Pro Bowl position just to honor players like him, acknowledging the essential, selfless role of the blocking fullback.
For much of NFL history, the Pro Bowl focused on traditional running backs who accumulated high rushing yardage. This left little room for the specialized fullback, whose primary duty is to block rather than carry the ball. Daryl Johnston, a standout for the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1997, became the definitive example of this role. His ability to pave the way for Emmitt Smith—who went on to become the league's all-time rushing leader—was so vital that the NFL eventually created a dedicated fullback position in the Pro Bowl to ensure such specialists could be recognized.
Johnston's career was defined by a unique statistical profile. Unlike many running backs, he recorded more receptions than carries, totaling 294 receptions for 2,227 yards. This versatility made him a cornerstone of the Cowboys' offense during their era of dominance, contributing to three Super Bowl victories. His career was ultimately cut short by a neck injury sustained in 1997, leading to his retirement after the 1999 season.
The bond between Johnston and Smith remains one of the most storied in professional football. During Smith's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010, Smith offered a public tribute to Johnston, stating that the record-breaking achievements would not have been possible without him. This sentiment echoed the emotional embrace the two shared on the field after Smith broke the rushing record, a moment Johnston witnessed from the broadcasting booth.
