How a stage manager became the face of India's most iconic figures
In short: From a twelve-year-old child actor to a National Award winner, Rajit Kapur has mastered the art of transformation. He has stepped into the shoes of Mahatma Gandhi and the detective Byomkesh Bakshi, building a career that spans theatre, television, and major commercial cinema.
Born in Amritsar on 27 August 1963, Rajit Kapur's journey into the spotlight began early. At just 12 years old, he appeared in a children's drama on Doordarshan. However, his path to professional acting was not immediate; after a decade of working as a stage manager, he transitioned to television in his early twenties with the series Ghar Jamai.
Kapur's breakout recognition came through his portrayal of the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi, a character created by Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Directed by Basu Chatterjee and broadcast on Doordarshan in 1993, the series became a cultural phenomenon. This success paved the way for a diverse filmography, including his 1992 film debut, Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, directed by Shyam Benegal.
His versatility is evidenced by his ability to tackle intense historical and dramatic roles. His performance as Mahatma Gandhi in The Making of the Mahatma earned him the 1996 National Film Award for Best Actor. He showcased his versatility in the 1999 Malayalam production Agnisakshi, securing the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor while the movie gained the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
In recent years, Kapur has continued to expand his repertoire, appearing in commercial successes like Raazi and playing Pakistan's Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in both Mission Majnu and Mujib: The Making of a Nation in 2023. His work also extends to short films, such as the 2022 Punjabi film Birha – The Journey Back Home, which secured multiple international awards.
