In short: In the 1970s, Dave Hope was a prominent figure in the progressive rock scene with Kansas, known as much for his heavy drug use as his bass playing. Yet, a profound spiritual shift in 1980 would eventually lead him from the stage to the pulpit.

Dave Hope’s musical journey began long before he reached rock stardom. During his high school years, he focused on traditional brass instruments, playing both the tuba and the trumpet in his school band. This foundational training eventually led him to the progressive rock band Kansas, where he served as the bassist from the group's original formation in 1970 until their initial dissolution in 1983.

The 1970s marked a period of intense lifestyle extremes for Hope. While contributing to the sound of Kansas, he was widely recognized for his heavy drug use. However, a significant turning point occurred in 1980 when Hope became a born-again Christian. This spiritual conversion prompted a much cleaner lifestyle, fundamentally altering the trajectory of his personal and professional life.

Following the first split of Kansas, Hope continued his musical career with the Christian band AD, alongside Kerry Livgren, Michael Gleason, Warren Ham, and Dennis Holt. The group released two albums and toured between 1983 and 1986. While Hope participated in various reunions of the original Kansas lineup—including the 2000 reunion for the album Somewhere to Elsewhere—his ultimate calling lay in the church. He eventually became an Anglican priest, serving as the head of Worship, Evangelism and Outreach at Immanuel Anglican Church in Destin, Florida, until his retirement in 2013.

Today, Hope’s legacy is split between musical and theological contributions. He is a member of the West Topeka High School hall of fame, having been inducted in 2011, and has authored a commentary on the Gospel of Luke titled 'Looking at Luke Through the Eyes of Hope'. He continues to play music locally with a band called The Mulligans.
