The voice behind the monsters and the narrators of our childhoods
In short: From the gritty battlefields of Call of Duty to the whimsical world of Power Rangers, Dave Mallow spent over half a century shaping the auditory landscape of modern media. His career illustrates the invisible artistry of voice acting, where a single performer can inhabit dozens of distinct identities.
Born in 1948, Dave Mallow inherited a deep connection to broadcasting from his father, a 30-year veteran of Chicago's WGN radio and television. This lineage provided a foundation for Mallow's own 12-year tenure as a radio personality across the Midwest and New York City before he pivoted to the specialized world of voice acting in Los Angeles in 1984. He earned his BFA in Theater Arts from Drake University in 1970. Before his move to California, he spent over a decade establishing his presence in the radio scene.
Mallow became a cornerstone of the Saban Productions universe, providing the daily intros and a vast array of monsters for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise. His versatility allowed him to voice iconic characters like Baboo, as well as numerous uncredited creatures across various seasons, including Power Rangers Zeo, Turbo, and In Space. His reach extended into anime and gaming, where he voiced characters in Digimon: Digital Monsters and the Street Fighter franchise. He also contributed to the Digimon: Digital Monsters series as Angemon and Gekkomon. His work appeared in the anime FLCL as the character Amarao.
His technical range was vast enough to handle high-profile narration, audiobooks, and commercial work, as well as complex characterization in video games like Diablo III and the Warcraft series. Whether portraying historical figures like Richard Nixon in Call of Duty: Black Ops or providing the 'computer voice' for Just Shoot Me!, Mallow's work highlights the diverse mechanics of the industry, ranging from looping and dubbing to full-scale character creation. Mallow provided the voice for the Prince in Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. He also performed as the Bear in the Snow White and Rose Red production.
