In short: Born into the coaching ranks of the NFL, David Shaw transformed Stanford football. From orchestrating high-scoring offenses to breaking long-standing program records, his tenure defined an era of excellence for the Cardinal, proving that football expertise can truly run in the family.

David Lorenzo Shaw's journey in football was deeply influenced by his father, Willie, an experienced NFL and collegiate coach. After moving to the Bay Area in 1989 when his father joined Stanford, David eventually returned to his alma mater to play as a wide receiver from 1991 to 1994 under legendary coaches like Bill Walsh and Dennis Green.

Shaw's strategic mind was evident early in his coaching career. After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens, he joined Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. There, his offense dominated, leading the NCAA Division I-AA in passing, total, and scoring offense. This success paved the way for his return to Stanford as offensive coordinator in 2007.

As coordinator, Shaw helped lead the Cardinal to record-breaking offensive seasons, including scoring 524 points in 2010. When he was promoted to head coach in January 2011, he immediately reached three consecutive BCS bowl games, including a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. By 2015, he had secured his third Pac-12 championship in four years, becoming only the third coach in Stanford history to achieve such a feat.

His legacy at Stanford is marked by longevity and record-breaking success. In 2017, Shaw surpassed Pop Warner to become the winningest head coach in Stanford football history with 72 victories. Following his resignation in late 2022, Shaw moved into executive roles before returning to the sidelines as the Detroit Lions' passing game specialist in early 2025.
