The resilience of a quarterback who overcame leukemia to lead a national champion
In short: Davis Warren’s path to the spotlight wasn't just about athletic talent; it was a battle against a life-threatening diagnosis. After surviving leukemia as a high school junior, he navigated the grueling hierarchy of college football to eventually lead Michigan to a national title and a starting role.
Davis Warren’s journey began with a significant medical hurdle during his junior year of high school. Diagnosed with leukemia, Warren underwent five months of intensive therapy in Los Angeles. Despite the severity of the illness, he managed to appear in four games that season, completing 32-of-49 passes for 607 yards and six touchdowns before focusing on his recovery.
His return to athletics was marked by a non-traditional path. Reclassifying to the class of 2021, Warren entered the University of Michigan as a preferred walk-on. He spent years grinding in the shadows, earning the Scout Team Player of the Year honor in 2021 before finally securing a scholarship in 2022. In 2023, he contributed to Michigan's national championship victory as a backup, attempting five passes during that campaign.
The 2024 season saw Warren take center stage as a starter. His tenure was characterized by high-stakes volatility: he recorded two touchdowns and six interceptions across three starts in the early weeks of Big Ten play. However, he found stability later in the year, notably leading Michigan to a 24-17 victory over rival Michigan State and finishing the regular season with a 6-3 record as a starter.
Warren's career faced another physical setback on December 31, 2024, when he suffered a torn ACL during the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama. After announcing his return for a fifth season in January 2025, he spent the year recovering from the injury. On August 20, 2026, Warren began a new chapter as the starting quarterback for the Stanford Cardinal.
