From high school hero to Michigan legend: the versatile journey of Devin Gardner
In short: Before becoming a standout quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, Devin Gardner faced disciplinary setbacks and positional shifts. His ability to dominate both as a passer and a runner eventually earned him a place in Michigan history, breaking long-standing records and proving his elite dual-threat potential on the national stage.
Devin Gardner's path to collegiate stardom was marked by significant adaptation. During his sophomore year at University of Detroit Jesuit High School, he missed five games due to disciplinary issues, a period he later described as a vital turning point for his maturity. After transferring to Inkster High School, he established himself as a premier talent, leading the team to a state title game in 2008 and a second consecutive appearance in 2009.
At the University of Michigan, Gardner's versatility was his defining characteristic. He enrolled in January 2010 and spent his first two seasons primarily as a backup. In the first half of the 2012 season, he actually converted to wide receiver, but he returned to the quarterback position following an elbow injury to teammate Denard Robinson. This move proved transformative; by his first start against Minnesota on November 3, 2012, he was already demonstrating elite playmaking ability.
Gardner's 2013 season cemented his legacy. He became the inaugural recipient of the Tom Harmon Michigan Football Legends jersey, donning the No. 98 in over 70 years. Throughout that campaign, he reached huge statistical benchmarks, notably on October 19, 2013, when he eclipsed John Navarre's Michigan single-game mark with 503 passing yards. Furthermore, he exceeded Denard Robinson's single-game total offense record by reaching 584 yards. Because of his game-changing talent, the New England Patriots signed him as an undrafted free agent, and he subsequently spent two seasons playing professionally in Japan.
His high school prospects were evident when Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback across the United States. His ability to manage complex offenses and his physical athleticism made him a highly sought-after prospect, leading to a verbal commitment to Michigan in the spring of 2009.
