In short: In the hostile, mineral-rich caves of Hoxxes IV, four players take on the roles of dwarf miners in a cooperative shooter that prioritizes teamwork over individual skill. By blending destructible environments with class-based synergy, the game has evolved from a 2018 early access experiment into a massive, multi-million-selling franchise.

Developed by the Danish studio Ghost Ship Games, Deep Rock Galactic launched into early access on February 28, 2018, before its full release on May 13, 2020. The developers drew inspiration from Minecraft and Left 4 Dead, specifically aiming to solve the balancing issues often found in cooperative games. They wanted to ensure that new players and veterans could play together on even footing, a design philosophy that permeates their four distinct classes: Scout, Engineer, Gunner, and Driller.

The core of the experience lies in its procedural world generator, which the team identified as the most challenging aspect of development. Using Unreal Engine and Blueprint scripting, they created fully destructible cave systems that change with every mission. Whether mining Morkite, salvaging abandoned equipment, or battling Glyphid Dreadnoughts, players must navigate these mazes while managing limited ammunition and environmental hazards. The game’s success is reflected in its growth, having sold over eight million units by January 2024.

Beyond the standard missions, the game features complex progression systems, seasonal updates, and high-stakes challenges like Deep Dives. The community-driven development model, refined during its two-year early access period, continues today through themed seasons that introduce new enemies and equipment. The franchise has since expanded into board games and spin-offs like the top-down shooter Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and the rogue-lite Rogue Core, which entered early access in May 2026.
