From Seattle's South End to NBA All-Star: The resilient rise of Dejounte Murray
In short: Before becoming an NBA All-Star, Dejounte Murray navigated a childhood marked by instability and violence in Seattle. His journey from juvenile detention to professional stardom is a masterclass in overcoming adversity through sheer athletic dominance and defensive tenacity.
Born in 1996, Murray's early years in the South End area of Seattle were shaped by significant hardship, including exposure to drug and gun violence, homelessness, and parental incarceration. Even before entering high school, he spent time in juvenile detention. However, his path changed at Rainier Beach High School, a basketball powerhouse where he secured three Class 3A state titles and received mentorship from NBA veteran Jamal Crawford.
Murray's professional ascent was rapid. After a standout freshman season with the Washington Huskies, he bypassed his remaining college years to enter the 2016 NBA draft, where the San Antonio Spurs selected him 29th overall. He quickly established himself as a defensive force, earning NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors as one of the league's youngest recipients. His tenure in San Antonio was marked by historic efficiency; he became the first player since Kawhi Leonard to reach 500 points and 300 rebounds within his first 100 games.
His career has been defined by both spectacular peaks and physical setbacks. While he led the league in steals in 2022 and earned his first All-Star nod, he also faced a devastating torn ACL in 2018 and a torn right Achilles tendon in early 2025. Despite these injuries, Murray has remained a high-impact playmaker, moving from the Spurs to the Atlanta Hawks, and eventually to the New Orleans Pelicans, consistently delivering high-scoring performances and clutch, game-winning shots.
