One phrase changed the Marvel Universe, leaving millions of mutants powerless
In short: When Wanda Maximoff uttered the words "No more mutants," she didn't just end an alternate reality; she rewrote the fabric of existence. This single act, known as the Decimation, stripped the vast majority of mutants of their abilities, transforming them from a global population into a dwindling, endangered species.
The Decimation was a reality-altering event caused by Wanda Maximoff during the House of M limited series' conclusion. By uttering her famous phrase, she dissolved the alternate Earth-58163 reality and snapped the universe back to its core reality, Earth-616, but with a fundamental change: the mutant X-gene was suppressed. This caused a years-long halt in new mutant births and stripped existing individuals of their abilities, shrinking the mutant race from millions to a symbolic figure of under 200.
The scale of this loss was immense. While pre-Decimation estimates varied—ranging from over a million to as many as 30 million mutants—the event effectively removed over 99% of the population. This shift fundamentally altered the X-Men's role in the Marvel Universe, returning them to their status as alienated and feared outsiders. The event also sparked an upswing in anti-mutant sentiment, with some religious groups viewing the loss of powers as divine judgment.
The disappearance of this biological energy was not without consequence. Characters like Hank Pym and Beast noted that the energy could not simply vanish; it had to be sent elsewhere. This energy eventually coalesced into a sentient entity known as the Collective. Meanwhile, the Decimation served as a narrative tool for Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada to reduce the number of mutant characters, which he felt had become unmanageable after forty years of publishing.
