South Korea is facing a demographic collapse that is unprecedented in human history.
In short: Once a rapidly growing nation, South Korea now holds the world's lowest birth rate. With a fertility rate of just 0.75 as of 2024, the country is aging faster than any other developed nation, threatening its labor force, economic stability, and the future of its social infrastructure.
South Korea’s demographic trajectory has shifted dramatically since the republic's establishment in 1948. In 1949, the first official census recorded a population of approximately 20.19 million. By 2021, the population peaked at 51.77 million. However, this growth has stalled and reversed. The total fertility rate (TFR) has plummeted from 6.1 in 1960 to a record low of 0.75 in 2024, far below the replacement level of 2.1. Projections from Statistics Korea suggest the population could fall to 36.22 million by 2072.
The causes of this decline are multifaceted. Experts point to high economic inequality, rising housing costs, low wages, and a lack of job opportunities for young adults. Cultural factors also play a role; traditional Confucian values emphasizing a preference for sons and the expectation that children care for aging parents have clashed with modern economic pressures. Furthermore, the country faces an aging crisis, with the percentage of citizens aged 65 and older rising from 3.3% in 1955 to 21.6% by 2026. This transition is occurring at an unprecedented speed, with the aging population doubling from 7% to 14% in just 18 years.
The consequences of this shift are profound. A shrinking labor force, dominated by middle-aged workers, risks losing the vibrancy and innovation required for a competitive economy. Investors may look to relocate to countries with younger, cheaper labor pools. Additionally, the government faces mounting pressure to fund healthcare for an elderly population while struggling to address the pediatric care crisis, where low birth rates have led to the closure of many pediatric facilities. As the large generation born in the 1960s begins to pass away, the nation faces the prospect of a sustained population decline, marking a stark departure from the rapid expansion of the 20th century.
