How a high school star became an NFL defensive powerhouse
In short: From a top-ranked recruit in Georgia to a record-breaking force in the NFL, Derrick Brown’s ascent was defined by relentless productivity. Discover how this defensive tackle transformed from an Auburn standout into a cornerstone of the Carolina Panthers' defense.
Derrick Brown's journey to professional prominence began with elite status in the 2016 recruiting class. Ranked as the No. 1 player in Georgia and the No. 9 overall recruit by 247Sports Composite, the five-star defensive tackle committed to the Auburn Tigers on February 3, 2016. During his time at Auburn, his statistics improved consistently, leading to unanimous All-American status and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019. Before his collegiate success, he was a standout at Lanier High School, where he amassed 270 tackles and 33.5 sacks. His recruitment profile also saw him ranked as the fourth-best defensive tackle in his class.
His dominance in the trenches translated quickly to the NFL. In May 2020, Brown joined the Carolina Panthers on a four-year rookie deal valued at $23.621 million after being taken seventh in the 2020 NFL draft. While his rookie season included notable moments, such as sacking Aaron Rodgers, his true breakout occurred in 2023. He achieved 103 total tackles that season, establishing a new NFL single-season benchmark for defensive linemen since 1994. His impact was felt early, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. He even matched a franchise record for defensive linemen with 67 tackles during the 2022 campaign.
Despite facing significant setbacks, including a season-ending knee injury in September 2024, Brown demonstrated remarkable resilience. He returned to play all 17 games in 2025, earning the Ed Block Courage Award from his teammates. His continued excellence led to a massive four-year, $96 million contract extension with the Panthers in April 2024, and by 2026, he earned his first appearance on the NFL Top 100 Players list. The Panthers secured his future with a deal that included $63.165 million in guarantees. His professional journey even saw a Pro Bowl selection in early 2024 as a replacement for Aaron Donald.
